Mount Elementary Students Explore Moon Phases With a Sweet Twist

Fifth grade students in Ms. Baldante’s science classes at Mount Elementary recently brought astronomy to life with a hands-on activity. After learning about the phases of the moon, students used Oreo cookies to creatively recreate each phase, combining science and fun in a memorable lesson.

Photos from the classroom show students engaged and enjoying the process as they explored the lunar cycle in a unique – and tasty – way.

Mount Elementary Hosts Annual Fancy Lunch for 5th and 6th Graders

W.S. Mount Elementary School recently hosted its beloved Fancy Lunch, an annual tradition that began in 2016 as a Site-Based Team initiative with support from the Mount PTA. This year’s event marked an exciting expansion, including both fifth and sixth grade students, as they prepare for their transition to middle school.

The event offers students a fun, hands-on opportunity to practice the manners and etiquette they learned during a special presentation. Topics covered included general manners, table etiquette, formal place settings and tips on making respectful introductions in social settings.

Students dressed for the occasion, adding to the sense of formality and celebration. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with many students expressing how much they enjoyed the experience and appreciated the chance to learn in such an engaging way.

Mount Elementary Celebrates Mental Health Awareness Month With Weeklong Activities

In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, Mount Elementary School hosted a weeklong celebration to promote mental health and well-being. Students in grades 3-6 participated in a Self-Care Fair during their health classes, engaging in fun and therapeutic activities. These included shredding their worries, coloring, playing bingo and writing down personal coping strategies to help them feel their best.

Meanwhile, younger students in kindergarten through second grade explored the importance of mental health and healthy coping skills. Through videos, books and hands-on activities, they learned valuable lessons about taking care of their mental well-being in a supportive and positive school environment.

The week’s events not only educated students about mental health but also encouraged them to practice self-care and foster a culture of kindness and support within the school community.

Students in Ms. Katie Wonderland’s sixth grade science class at Mount Elementary recently took on an exciting STEM challenge – to build the tallest free-standing tower using Keva Planks.

Working in small teams, students explored engineering concepts such as balance, structure and stability. The hands-on activity encouraged problem-solving, collaboration and creativity as students tested different designs and strategies.

Challenges like these are part of Mount Elementary’s commitment to engaging students in meaningful, real-world applications of science, technology, engineering and math.
